A new Italian study says that people with higher education levels and intellectually demanding jobs help to create a buffer against cognitive impairment. Among adults with the same level of memory impairment, those with higher education levels and mentally demanding jobs had significantly fewer brain changes and impairments than their less educated counterparts. The theory is that their brains have the ability to compensate for the damage, allowing them to sustain function in spite of the injury.
